Astronaut Neil Armstrong Dies

Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, is dead at the age of 82. He was the first of just 12 Americans to step on the moon from 1969 to 1972. Guest host Laura Sullivan speaks with science journalist Andrew Chaikin, who knew Armstrong and wrote about his contributions to the space program.

LAURA SULLIVAN, HOST:

It's WEEKENDS on ALL THINGS CONSIDERED from NPR News. I'm Laura Sullivan, in for Guy Raz.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

NEIL ARMSTRONG: That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.

SULLIVAN: Astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon. He died today at the age of 82 after complications from a heart procedure. He was the first of just 12 Americans to step on the moon from 1969 to 1972.

(SOUNDBITE OF ARCHIVED RECORDING)

ARMSTRONG: It has a stark beauty all its own. It's like much of the high desert of the United States. It's different, but it's very pretty out here.

SULLIVAN: Neil Armstrong was known as a private man and gave very few interviews. But science journalist Andrew Chaikin convinced Armstrong in 1988 to speak to him for his book "A Man on the Moon: Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts." Neil Armstrong and Andrew Chaikin grew to be friends.

And Andrew Chaikin joins us now from his home in Vermont. Andrew, that line, one small step, you know, that line said a lot about Neil Armstrong, didn't it?

ANDREW CHAIKIN: Well, what really, to me, said a lot about Neil was the conversation we had about that quote. And I promised him I was not going to ask him about it in our interview because everybody asks him about it, and I already knew the story of how he came up with that quote on the moon just a couple of hours after they landed. But what he said to me was the emotional moment was the landing. That was human contact with the moon. But the rest of the world was so focused on that first footstep that he really had no choice, and he did beautifully, as we all know. He came up with a wonderful quote.

SULLIVAN: As we mentioned, he was a notoriously private man, but you came to know him as a friend. How was Neil Armstrong, the public figure, different from the Neil Armstrong, say, at dinner with his family?

CHAIKIN: Well, I think the thing that people don't realize is, you know, he was so shy. He was really uncomfortable with the attention. And it's ironic that someone who is that way was thrust into one of the most absolutely white hot glares of publicity and celebrity that any human has had to endure. Having said that, when you got him away from that and he felt comfortable, he was warm, he was engaging, he had a really dry, delightful sense of humor, could tell great stories and could laugh. And, you know, he really was a delight.

And the more I got to know him, the more I kind of cherished that about him. But at the same time, I always had this feeling of tremendous admiration for Neil as a pioneer, as an explorer, as really the essence of the test pilot who did what he did, not for his own gratification, but for advancing the state of human knowledge and achievement.

SULLIVAN: Did Armstrong have thoughts on the direction of the U.S. space program later in life?

CHAIKIN: Yes. We talked about that some. He was very distressed at the way that NASA's future had become what he called the equivalent of a badminton shuttlecock getting hit back and forth between Congress and the White House and so on. But I think he was most anxious to see us get back in the exploration game, to get back to the moon and go even farther. But I never doubted his motivation or his passion or his belief that space exploration is part of the destiny of humankind.

SULLIVAN: Do you have any favorite memories of him, anything that jumps out at you when you think of Neil Armstrong?

CHAIKIN: Actually, one of the moments that I think about most is about an hour and a half into the moon walk, Buzz Aldrin had a different task to work on than Neil did, and Neil actually had a minute to be off on his own and explore the area. And he took off running to a crater that was about 200 feet behind the Lunar Lander. It only took him about a minute to run back there and snap some pictures and then another minute to run back, you know? And I often picture him loping in that one-sixth lunar gravity, literally venturing where no human had gone before. And, you know, it's a great little moment of human exploration that I always associate with him.

SULLIVAN: That's journalist Andrew Chaikin speaking about Neil Armstrong who died today at the age of 82. Andrew, thank you so much for joining us.

CHAIKIN: Thank you.

Apple awarded over $1bn in epic US - World News Tomorrow

WORLD NEWS ? Samsung was dealt a blow late last night when the jury in its patent case against Apple ruled in favour of the Cupertino-based company on a number of key claims and awarded Apple more than $1 billion in damages ? that?s in excess of ?630 million in old money.

Samsung, meanwhile, lost its patent claims and was not awarded any damages.

The jury found that Samsung infringed on a number of Apple design and utility patents with a variety of its devices, from the Fascinate to the Galaxy S2. Samsung prevailed on some of the devices in question, but it lost on many more.

The jury found that Samsung willfully infringed on five of the six Apple patents in question, and awarded $1.05 billion in total damages.

Those damages covered infringement on devices like the Samsung Epic 4G, Captivate, Galaxy S2, Indulge, the Vibrant, and more ? not all of which are available in the UK.

Jurors debated for several days before returning their verdict around 23:00 GMT last night. Given the scope of the case, it took just about a half hour for the entire verdict to be read.

Lawyers for both sides are currently reviewing the verdict before Judge Lucy Koh will allow the jury to leave. Stay tuned for more details on the verdict and its implications.

The case dates back to April 2011, when Apple sued Samsung for ?slavishly? copying the iPhone and iPad with its Galaxy lineup of devices. Samsung countersued and the case has since spread to dozens of courts around the globe. Apple has had some success in getting the Galaxy Nexus and Galaxy Tab banned in various regions, but it is the California trial that had everyone watching.

Heart Disease Runs in the Family | Men's Health News

Father and son outdoors

Spell "cholesterol." C, H, O, L . . .

Are you at risk for heart disease? Check your grandpa?s obit. Having a relative die of heart complications before age 60 doubles your own risk of premature heart disease, according to a new study published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology. Even more: if it?s a parent or sibling, your risk shoots up 72 percent. If there are two or more premature cardiovascular deaths, your risk increases two-fold compared to just one.

Researchers studied the family history of about 4 million people from a public health care database?the largest study to look at the matter?and found the risk to hold true independent of other heart disease risk factors like high blood pressure, cholesterol levels, or diabetes.

?Whenever we see events that occur early in life clustering in families, we tend to think that there must be an underlying genetic contribution,? says Mattis F. Ranthe, M.D., Ph.D. student at Statens Serum Institut in Copenhagen, and researcher of the study. More specifically, bad genes are to blame, adds Eric Topol, M.D., director of the Scripps Translational Science Institute, and Men?s Health cardiology advisor.

The only thing is, doctors can?t yet pinpoint just which genes are the bad ones. ?I?ll have patients come in who know they have this issue in the family wondering if they?ll have the same fate,? says Dr. Topol. ?Hopefully in the future we can look at genes and determine which ones could be risk factors.?

Until then, if early death from heart complications runs in the family, it?s time to go into high gear prevention mode, says Dr. Topol. If you?re not sure, try to find out what you can about your family history by asking around or checking public death records, says Dr. Ranthe. And clean up your act?whether or not it runs in the family. Being overweight, smoking, drinking, and high blood pressure up your risk of heart problems, and are easy changes to make. Ryder Cup hopeful Harrington leads Barclays

Irishman Padraig Harrington seized the first-round lead with a seven-under 64 at The Barclays, the first tournament of the PGA Tour playoffs.

Harrington has a one-stroke lead over Nick Watney and Brian Harman, who both fired six-under 65s on the Bethpage course.

Harrington is hoping a strong showing at the event will convince European Ryder Cup captain Jose Maria Olazabal to make him one of his two captain's picks.

Sergio Garcia, of Spain, shot a 66 and shares fourth place with Pat Perez, England's Gary Christian and Jimmy Walker. Garcia won last week at the Wyndham Championship.

American Tiger Woods is part of a group tied for 14th after carding a three-under 68. Defending champion Dustin Johnson is one stroke ahead of FedEx Cup points leader Woods in eighth.

While The Barclays is the first of four PGA Tour playoff events, a more immediate concern for Harrington is the Ryder Cup. He cannot make the European team on points so he needs to show Olazabal that he is worthy to compete in his seventh straight Ryder Cup.

"The only answer I can give at this stage is I'm pleading the Fifth Amendment on that one," Harrington said.

"I honestly don't know what to say. I don't want to go in there and try too desperately to beg for a pick, or I don't want to go in there and give excuses for anything. I'll just leave it be what it is. I'm just going to play golf."

Woods' playing partner Rory McIlroy shot a 69. Woods scrambled to save some early pars and McIlroy got off to a good start, finishing with five birdies and three bogeys.

Woods and McIlroy will be playing together during the opening two rounds because the event groups players based on their FedEx Cup standings -- Woods is in first place while McIlroy is currently third.

Joining Johnson in eighth place were Rickie Fowler, Justin Rose, George McNeill, K.J. Choi, and Jonas Blixt.

Phil Mickelson, Luke Donald, Ernie Els and Vijay Singh are among those tied for 14th with Woods.

The event also marks the start of the FedEx Cup playoffs. The top 100 in the standings advance to the second round at the Deutsche Bank Championship and then the top 70 move on to the BMW Championship.

The top 30 reach the FedEx Cup final at the Tour Championship, with the winner pocketing $10 million.

Personal Loans For Poor Credit - Personal finance blogs

Personal loans for poor credit options can often be limiting and what this means is that you have either of two choices: going for a secured loan or for an unsecured loan. They both have high interest rates but the main difference is that secured loans may be safer since you will have been granted a longer time to pay off the loan; unlike the unsecured loan that makes you pay higher monthly payments at a shorter amount of time.

These two options will actually be presented to you when you apply for personal loans for poor credit. When it comes to bad credit history, this is the kind of thing that you will come to expect but this does not mean that you have no way out. These loans are here specifically so that you can dig yourself out of the debt hole that you have fallen into. These are the two chances that you have to learn to understand and here is what you need to know.

Secured Loans

When it comes to secured loans, they are probably the safest. However, there is one steep requirement if you really want to avail of these loans. You need to have an asset or property that you can put up as collateral. Now, this is not a big thing to worry about. After all, you can be assured lower monthly payments and they can be made at a longer amount of time so that you can also put some savings aside for yourself. However, if you prove that you are not able to pay this loan off completely, you will need to give up the collateral as payment and this is a big risk for the borrower. Therefore, this is really the catch when it comes to the secured loan. The lender will approve this loan if you have something to present as collateral because it will be safe for them since they know they have something to fall back on. Depending on how you look at it, this can either be a bad or a good personal loans for poor credit option.

Unsecured Loans

Of course, there is also a loan for those who do not have assets that they can present as collateral. This means that lenders will be put at great risk here because they will have nothing to fall back on if a borrower cannot pay back the loan. What happens here is that the monthly payments will become higher with high interest rates and with shorter amounts of time for payback. This is usually the best loan for people who can prove that they can make the high payments on time. It is not a loan that can get an easy approval because lenders do not like to take the risk with these personal loans for poor credit options.

LA Galaxy Vs. Isidro Metapan, 2012 CONCACAF Champions League: LA Wins 5-2 Shootout

There was no shortage of goals or drama at the Home Depot Center on Thursday night. The LA Galaxy and Isidro Metapan combined for seven goals, saw Robbie Keane get sent off for asking to be subbed off and generally spent 90 minutes running around like chickens with their heads cut off just to better entertain us*. In the end, things went the way of the home team as the Galaxy answered Metapan's opener with four consecutive goals en route to a 5-2 win.

* Or so it is nice to think

Both teams played without a key player. For LA, Landon Donovan was the key man missing as he dealt with an injury, while Metapan continued life without Lester Blanco, who left for Norway on loan.

After the Galaxy dominated the early exchanges, Munoz shocked the home side with a 17th minute goal. A bad giveaway by Sean Franklin put the Galaxy in trouble and while Todd Dunivant did well to clear a ball off of the line, it only went as far as Munoz. The striker then fired off the inside of the post and in to put Metapan in front.

It took just three minutes for the Galaxy to equalize, though. More accurately, Metapan leveled for the Galaxy because while David Beckham did put a good cross in for Mike Magee, the ball never made it to Magee. Instead, it deflected off of Ricardo Alvarado and into the net to put the match back on level terms.

Two minutes later, a Beckham cross caused problems for Metapan again, although this time his cross did find a teammate. He hit a great ball from the right to the far post to find Keane, who snapped his header down and underneath the sprawling Fidel Mondragon.

As the first half entered stoppage time, it looked like LA would have to settle for their one-goal lead, but a late corner kick by Beckham and a mistake by Mondragon saw the Galaxy tally again before the break. The Englishman whipped in a corner that was curling in towards the net and asked Mondragon to knock it away, but the Metapan keeper couldn't do it. He got to the ball late, as it was already on the line, and could only knock it into his own net as Beckham picked up another Olimpico.

Up 3-1, LA looked to have the match in hand, but a red card to Keane changed things up. This wasn't your average red card, though. First, the referee showed Keane a yellow for a dive after he was kicked in the shins. Then while on the ground, Keane motioned to the LA bench for a substitution and the referee responded by showing him a red card. In true CONCACAF form, the referee thought Keane asking for a substitution was an act of dissent and showed him a second yellow card*, ending his day and leaving LA with 10 men.

* This same referee would go on to give Michael Stephens a yellow card before he entered the match as a substitute for time wasting because Stephens dared wait for the fourth official to tell him to go on. It was a special night.

But being down a man didn't hurt LA. 12 minutes after Keane was sent off, Juninho tapped in a pass from Stephens to put the Galaxy 4-1 up. Metapan did their best to mount a comeback and earned a penalty in the 87th minute, which Munoz converted, but Juninho added his second tally in the 90th minute to finish off a Galaxy win.

LA now sit atop Group 5 with Metapan on three points, but they have only played one match to Metapan's two. The Puerto Rico Islanders are bottom of the group on zero points, having just played one match.

Ken Shamrock accidentally scores a knockout

Former UFC champ Ken Shamrock is nicknamed the "World's Most Dangerous Man," and he proved this title while in a mall in California. TMZ reports Shamrock reportedly hit a woman while trying to break up a fight.

He saw two women involved in a fight while sitting at a mall in Modesto, Calif. He jumped in to try to separate them, when another person jumped on his back. He threw the back-jumper to the ground and threw a knockout punch, earning his first knockout since 2004.

It wasn't until she was out that Shamrock and the crowd yelled at him that he saw he had knocked out a woman. Though a report was taken, the police told TMZ they most likely won't press charges because Shamrock was acting in self-defense.

Shamrock's rep notes, "Outside the ring, Ken is not a violent man ... and was only trying to do the right thing."

Inside the ring, Shamrock's last fight was in November of 2010. He lost in a TKO due to leg injury. His last UFC fight was a 2006 loss to Tito Ortiz, an ending to their longstanding rivalry. Shamrock's career spanned 17 years and included wins in PRIDE, Pancrase and the UFC.

Air crews make dent in massive Calif. wildfire

MINERAL, Calif. (AP) ? Air tankers and helicopters flew repeatedly into a deep rim rock canyon to douse the spearhead of a massive wildfire in Northern California and stop it from driving into a nearby mountain community and Lassen Volcanic National Park.

"This is the critical spot we have on the fire now," CalFire Division Chief Scott Lindgren said Thursday as he watched the air drops of fire retardant and water on flames burning the steep timbered sides of the canyon, about 6 miles west of Mineral.

He was standing in a backyard on the edge of a cliff, where the brush and dirt were colored orange-pink by a recent drop of retardant.

"The further east we go, the harder it is to stop this thing," he said. "The problem is, we catch it up on top (of the basalt rim rock) at night, but we can't catch it on the bottom (of the canyon) because of the cliff."

It has helped to slow the fire's spread so far, reducing the threat to miles of commercial timberland, the mountain community of Mineral, and the park. A logging road to the east was cleared to serve as a contingency line if the air attacks don't stop the fire from running up the canyon.

Sixty-four homes and 20 other buildings have been destroyed, mostly in the Manton area, since lightning ignited the blaze Saturday, state fire spokesman Don Camp said. It was threatening 900 other homes as it burned a new front to the south.

About 2,500 firefighters were at the blaze, which has grown to 44 square miles in the piney hills about 25 miles southeast of Redding.

Watching the drops with the fire chief were Jane Carney, Kelly Strong and Sherill Jenkins, who said they were ready to leave their vacation home if necessary.

"We'll get out if we're told to get out," Strong said.

They stayed because, Jenkins said, "It's beautiful up here."

Mineral is a town of 187 vacation and year-round homes that serves as the gateway to the national park.

Beth Glenn, whose family owns area commercial buildings dating to 1896 said she was not nervous, having grown up in a firefighting family and living with the frequent fires in Southern California.

Elsewhere in the state, a large wildfire in Plumas National Forest expanded with help from gusty winds. The blaze, about 120 miles north of Sacramento, has consumed 99 square miles since it started at the end of July and threatens about 900 homes.

The California fires were among several stubborn wildfires in the West. In Washington, crews were still working on a week-old wildfire that has destroyed 51 homes and 26 outbuildings and damaged at least six other homes, authorities said.

The fire, about 75 miles east of Seattle, has caused an estimated $8.3 million in property damage.

In central Idaho, firefighters were burning and removing vegetation near the town of Featherville in hopes of protecting hundreds of evacuated homes from an approaching wildfire. Fire managers said that blaze already has charred 164 square miles, forcing the residents to evacuate due to heavy smoke.

(AP) ? Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan found themselves dragged into a debate Wednesday over hot-button social issues and answering for differences between their personal positions on abortion, just days before a national convention aimed at showing a unified Republican party. The discussion lingered while President Barack Obama and Romney tangled from afar over issues like education and the deficit.

The GOP ticket dealt with a renewed focus on abortion in the wake of comments about "legitimate rape" from Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, remarks that have caused an uproar and generated demands from Romney and party leaders for the congressman to quit the race.

The questions over abortion overshadowed events by Romney and Ryan in the battleground states of Iowa, North Carolina and Virginia ? three states which Obama carried in 2008 ? ahead of next week's Republican convention in Tampa, Fla. Obama rallied supporters in Nevada, the state with the nation's highest unemployment rate of 12 percent, before heading to New York for a basketball-themed fundraiser.

Since selecting Ryan as his running mate, Romney has faced questions about how his policy positions differ from those espoused by Ryan, the architect of a controversial budget blueprint that would dramatically alter Medicare. On abortion, Romney does not oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life, while Ryan does oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest.

Ryan, in an interview with a Pennsylvania TV station, emphasized Romney's role at the top of the ticket, saying he was proud of his record on the social issue. "I stand by my pro-life record in Congress. It's something I'm proud of. But Mitt Romney is the top of the ticket and Mitt Romney will be president and he will set the policy of the Romney administration," he said.

Ryan defended a bill he cosponsored in the House to permanently ban federal funding for abortion except in cases of incest and "forcible" rape. That language, which was eventually changed, would have narrowed the exception for rape victims. Akin and 225 other members of the House, including 11 Democrats, also cosponsored the bill.

Akin, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in a race that could determine control of the Senate, was asked in an interview that aired Sunday if abortion should be legal in cases of rape. Akin said: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Obama mocked Akin's words during a fundraiser in New York City, telling supporters Wednesday night that Akin, though a member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology, "somehow missed science class."

Obama added: "It's representative of the desire to go backwards instead of forwards and fight fights that we thought were settled 20 or 30 years ago."

Democrats have tried to tactfully steer the debate over abortion to appeal to female voters, including those living in hotly contested suburbs in battleground states such as Colorado, Florida, Ohio and Virginia. Obama did not address Akin's comments while campaigning in Nevada, but his campaign honed in on the legislation related to federal funding for abortions. Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said Ryan had "worked with Todd Akin to try to narrow the definition of rape and outlaw abortion even for rape victims."

A new AP-GfK poll found that Obama maintained a slight lead among women voters, with 50 percent of women backing the president and 44 percent supporting Romney. The gender gap was similar to a finding in a June AP-GfK poll. Men were more closely divided in the latest AP-GfK poll, with 49 percent for Romney and 44 percent for Obama. In the suburbs, the candidates were closely divided, with 47 percent supporting Romney and 44 percent for Obama.

Akin has refused to heed calls to step down and now would need a court order by Sept. 25 to leave the race. After that point, there would be no way to remove his name from the ballot. Ryan called the Missouri congressman and unsuccessfully urged him to exit the race, but he said he had no other plans to speak to him about it.

"He's going to run his campaign and we're going to run ours," Ryan said of Akin.

Campaigning in Iowa, Romney avoided talk of social issues during a stop at a manufacturing company in Bettendorf, instead criticizing Obama for failing to bring down the nation's debt and deficit.

Later, during a fundraiser in Little Rock, Ark., Romney called Wednesday a "very revealing day" because of the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office's warnings of a new recession ? including unemployment rates of more than 9 percent by late next year ? if Washington continues its stalemate over taxes and spending cuts. Romney said the CBO's conclusions were "unacceptable."

"This is a challenging time for America and one thin g I will do is I will finally cut federal spending, encourage growth and as a result of those two things get America to a balanced budget," Romney said.

Obama focused on education for a second straight day in Nevada, telling supporters at a North Las Vegas high school that GOP budget plans crafted by Ryan would force dramatic education cuts even as Romney's plan would "shower" tax cuts on millionaires.

"I've got a question for Gov. Romney. How many teachers' jobs are worth another tax cut for millionaires and billionaires? How many kids in Head Start are worth a tax cut for somebody like me who doesn't need it? How many grants and loans for college students are worth a tax cut for Gov. Romney who certainly doesn't need it?" Obama asked the crowd.

Romney countered that he heard the president "say how he wants to invest in young people. Let me tell you, if you want to invest in young people ... you need to make sure that our K-12 schools are getting better. That's No. 1. Not just talk, but actually getting better." He added that the nation needs "to make sure that we create jobs in this country so people coming out of school can get a good job."

Beyond the rallies, both campaigns were trying to sway voters on television. Romney's campaign released a new ad linking Obama's divisive health care overhaul to cuts in Medicare. The ad, titled "Nothing's Free," asserts that Obama raided $716 billion from Medicare in order to pay for his health care law. It's the first ad Romney's campaign has run focusing on health care since the Supreme Court upheld Obama's federal mandate in June.

Romney has promised to roll back the Medicare spending cuts approved under Obama, while Ryan kept the cuts in his budget proposals. The campaign did not say where the health care ad would run.

The Obama campaign released an ad suggesting Ryan's education cuts would lead to larger class sizes. A couple featured in the ad bemoans the prospect of increased class size and says Romney "cannot relate" to their desire to have the best public education system for their children. The ad is running in Virginia and Ohio.

With Republicans closing in on their convention, Obama's team is trying to steal some of the spotlight. Obama planned campaign events on college campuses in Iowa and Colorado on Tuesday ? including an evening rally in Fort Collins, Colo., on the GOP convention's first night ? and in Virginia on Wednesday. Vice President Joe Biden was traveling to Florida on Monday and Tuesday, including a stop in Tampa, and popular first lady Michelle Obama was appearing on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on the GOP convention's third night, a show that will air shortly after Ryan's address to the convention.

Obama won all four states in 2008 and are considered pivotal to Romney's path to the White House this year.

Amateurs show off Hubble's hidden gems

In this video from the European Hubble team, Joe Liske (aka Dr J) presents the winners of the "Hidden Treasures" image-processing competition.

By Alan Boyle

The team behind the Hubble Space Telescope has transformed our view of the universe through iconic images such as the Pillars of Creation and the Cat's Eye, but even the professionals can miss some gems?? as demonstrated by today's winners of the "Hubble's Hidden Treasures" contest.

The contest, which had its kickoff in March, invited members of the public to sort through more than 700,000 archived images from the space telescope and come up with pictures that have never before been put in the spotlight. The results illustrate how today's software is making it easier for amateur astronomers to do professional-level work.

The Hidden Treasures contest is sponsored by the folks at the European Space Agency's Hubble headquarters in Garching, Germany. Nearly 3,000 photo submissions were received, in two categories. One category was reserved for folks who used color compositing and other image-processing techniques to bring out the best in the Hubble imagery. The other was for folks who spotted great pictures in the archive, but didn't fully process the images themselves.

Ten winners were selected in each category and will receive prizes ranging from Hubble posters to Apple gadgets and autographs from "Hubble-hugging" astronaut John Grunsfeld.

Double-winner
The top winner in the image-processing category, as well as the "People's Choice" competition, is Josh Lake, a 34-year-old physics and astronomy teacher (and volleyball coach) at Pomfret School in Connecticut. Lake told me he was "really surprised and happy" to learn that he was a winner.

"We have our own observatory here, so I've been teaching students to do processing for the past five years or so," he said.

The fact that he won the People's Choice online contest might not have been so surprising, considering that he could enlist students and alumni, family and friends to vote for his picture of the star-forming region NGC 1763. "I was totally blown away to find out that I had won the jury prize, too" Lake said.

Lake said that image processing is "something that I love doing," but it sounds as if he won't be giving up his teaching job for a career in astronomical image processing anytime soon. "I think I would really miss the students and this community," he said. "It'd be a tough lifestyle to break out of, and just go to a 9-to-5 job sitting in front of a computer. ... The work here is hard, but it's life-changing."

Here's hoping that Lake's image-building feat will be life-changing as well. To get a sense of how he did it, check out this three-minute time-lapse video of the process, and then feast your eyes on the finished product:

A time-lapse video shows how Josh Lake transformed data from the Hubble Legacy Archive into a prize-winning picture of the star-forming region known as NGC 1763, using software tools including PixInsight and Photoshop. Music by Sigur Ros: Gobbledigook

NASA / ESA / Josh Lake

Josh Lake submitted a stunning image of NGC 1763, part of the N11 star-forming region in the Large Magellanic Cloud. ESA/Hubble had previously published an image of an area just adjacent to this, based on observations by the same team. Josh took a different approach, producing a bold two-color image that contrasts the light from glowing hydrogen and nitrogen. The image is not in natural colors ? hydrogen and nitrogen produce almost indistinguishable shades of red light that our eyes would struggle to tell apart ? but Josh's processing separates them out into blue and red, dramatically highlighting the structure of the region. As well as narrowly topping the jury's vote, Josh Lake also won the public vote.

Here are a few more of the contest winners, with comments from the European Hubble team. For links to all 20 images, check out the European Hubble site's "Hidden Treasures" announcement.

NASA / ESA / Andre van der Hoeven

Andre van der Hoeven of the Netherlands came a close second in the jury vote. His image of the spiral galaxy Messier 77 is highly attractive, and is also an impressive piece of image processing, combining a number of datasets from separate instruments into one amazing picture.

NASA / ESA / Judy Schmidt

Judy Schmidt of the United States entered several highly accomplished images into the competition. Her picture of XZ Tauri, a newborn star spraying out gas into its surroundings and lighting up a nearby cloud of dust, was the jury's favorite - and won third place in the image-processing contest. This was a challenging dataset to process, as Hubble only captured two colors in this area. Nevertheless, the end result is an attractive image, and an unusual object that we would never have found without her help

NASA / ESA / Brian Campbell

Brian Campbell's picture of NGC 6300 won first prize in the basic image-searching category.

NASA / ESA / Budeanu Cosmin Mirel

Budeanu Cosmin Mirel won the public vote in the basic image-searching category with a picture of NGC 4100.

Outdoor Foundation Releases 2012 Outdoor Recreation ...

The Outdoor Foundation

The Outdoor Foundation

Washington DC --(Ammoland.com)- Participation in outdoor recreation reached a five-year high in 2011 with nearly 50 percent of all Americans ages six and older enjoying the outdoors.

That equates to 141.1 million American outdoor participants. The findings are part of The Outdoor Foundation?s 2012 Outdoor Recreation Participation Report, the leading report tracking American participation trends in outdoor recreation with a focus on youth, diversity and the future of the outdoors.

The Outdoor Foundation?s sixth annual Outdoor Recreation Participation Report helps the outdoor industry, public agencies and community organizations better understand the trends in outdoor recreation participation, enabling groups to address America?s inactivity crisis and the disconnect between children and the outdoors. The report is based on an online survey of more than 40,000 Americans ages six and older and covers 114 different outdoor activities, making it the largest survey of its kind.

The study, which provides an in-depth look at youth, identifies an upward trend in outdoor participation among America?s youngest generations. Youth participation overall grew by one-percentage point in each age group, from 6 to 24.

Among young boys, outdoor participation grew by two-percentage points ? reversing a downward trend that began in 2007. Although participation rates for girls the same age remained stagnant, participation among female teenagers grew by two-percentage points to reach the highest participation rate for female teenagers recorded in this report.

?The Outdoor Participation Report shows that, thanks to national efforts to connect Americans with the outdoors, people are increasingly more inspired to get up and get outside,? said Chris Fanning, executive director of The Outdoor Foundation. ?We are especially encouraged by the report?s findings that more youth are enjoying outdoor activities, as this will ensure healthier children, healthier communities and healthier businesses.?

The insights detailed in the 2012 Outdoor Recreation Participation Report are critical to national efforts seeking to understand outdoor participation and continuing to reverse America?s inactivity crisis.

Some of the additional findings include:

* In 2011, outdoor participants made 11.5 billion outings ? that is 1.4 billion more outings than 2010.
* Of all age groups, teenagers ages 13 to 17 have the most core outdoor participants (or regular participants) at 39 percent.
* Almost half of all outdoor enthusiasts participate in outdoor activities at least once a week.
* Participants in gateway activities are more likely to enjoy multiple outdoor activities, rather than just one. In fact, 87 percent of hikers participate in one or more other outdoor activities.
* Although participation rates among youth ages six to 17 are up, average annual outings are down from 98 outings per participant in 2010 to 81 outings in 2011.
* Youth who do not participate in outdoor activities say they are simply not interested in the outdoors. For young adults, lack of time is a bigger barrier than lack of interest.
* Introducing outdoor recreation and physical activities early in life has a lasting effect. Among adults who are current outdoor participants, 82 percent report having a physical education class between the ages of six and 12. Forty-five percent of adult outdoor participants took part in outdoor activities from ages six to 12.
* As seen in previous reports, participation in outdoor activities was significantly higher among Caucasians than any other ethnicity and lowest among African Americans.
* Although Hispanics have among the lowest overall outdoor participation rate, those that do participate go outside the most often.

Four soldiers killed in Turkey's Kurd region

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey (Reuters) - Four Turkish soldiers were killed and two wounded on Wednesday by remote-controlled bombs targeting their convoy, security sources said, the latest sign of escalating violence in the Kurdish region.

The deaths follows a car bombing on Monday that killed nine people, including children, and wounded more than 60 others in the southern town of Gaziantep.

The government blamed that attack on the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK), which has denied involvement.

The army sent in troop reinforcements and helicopter gunships in response to Wednesday's incident in the Semdinli region of Hakkari province, which borders Iraq and Iran.

Roadside bombs are common in the southeast, scene of a 28-year conflict between the military and the PKK, listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union. More than 40,000 people, mainly Kurds, have died in the conflict.

The PKK has stepped up attacks in recent months, and Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan has accused Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of backing the rebels, underscoring fears that the turmoil in Syria could destabilize neighboring countries.

High Idea Screenwriting Defined: Easy methods to Write High Idea ...

High Notion is a term that is been confused, misunderstood and misused by writers for decades. The popular belief is that it's any film which can be pitched in a single sentence. A man who battles his wife for custody of their kids is a single sentence, but it's a million miles from becoming High Notion.

Others define it by describing it as "one film crossed with another film." In Robert Altman's The Player, the writers pitch their project to a producer as Out of Africa meets Pretty Lady. That may be not what a High Notion film is. What they made use of is a framing strategy that's offered prior to pitching your project to prepare the listener for what's coming. You cross two well identified films that touch upon the material you are about to pitch so the producer has some thought where you're going with your pitch. That may be an example of a popular pitching strategy and not what defines High Notion.

Story ideas, remedies and screenplays can all have High Notion premises. But only High Notion projects can be sold from a pitch because they are pitch driven. Non-High Notion projects can't be sold from a pitch because they are execution driven. They've to be read to be appreciated and their appeal isn't clear by merely running a logline previous somebody. This really is the reason why films like "Pulp Fiction," "Star Wars" and "Sideways" could by no means be sold from a pitch.

In defining High Notion, we talk in regards to the premise of one's story, not what happens in Acts 1, 2 and three. The premise or logline may be the core of High Notion. My thorough definition of High Notion is comprised of 5 requirements, every of that's mandatory. The 5 requirements are in descending order of value. Thus, numbers a single and two are essentially the most necessary together with essentially the most hard to attain. But meeting only a number of with the requirements is just not adequate. All 5 requirements need to be met for results in attaining the "slam dunk" project everyone is searching for. obat tradisional keputihan
Requirement #1:
YOUR PREMISE Needs to be ORIGINAL AND Special
A logline is frequently a single to 5 sentences, together with the average becoming 3. Thus, you will need to pitch your material inside a compressed, economical manner which captures the essence of one's story and showcases its originality. The majority of my pitches are a single or two sentences extended. Each and every writer should practice pitching his or her function by boiling down their story into only a single sentence regardless if their story is High Notion or not.

In seeking originality, we are not talking about reinventing the wheel. We can take conventional subject matter that is been accomplished prior to and add a hook or twist to it which then qualifies the material as original. Utilizing the kidnapping plot, there have been dozens of films which covered that subject region prior to. Within the film Ransom, Mel Gibson plays a wealthy businessman whose son is kidnapped. That story in itself offers nothing at all new. The hook with the film which tends to make it original is that instead of paying the ransom, Gibson makes use of the ransom money to pay for any contract hit on the kidnappers. That twist tends to make the film original and as a result High Notion. obat tradisional keputihan tk33

Staying together with the similar kidnapping genre, the comedy Ruthless Folks follows precisely the same pattern. Danny Devito plays a wealthy man whose wife, played by Bette Midler, gets kidnapped. Challenging convention, Devito refuses to pay the ransom considering that he hates his wife and sees this as the opportunity he's been waiting for to lastly do away with her. Now the bungling kidnappers are stuck with an not possible lady that they have no thought what to perform with. Yet again, it's that exclusive hook that tends to make this a High Notion film.
Requirement #2:
YOUR STORY HAS To have MASS AUDIENCE APPEAL
That signifies it's possible to meet Requirement #1 by generating an original story that is by no means been accomplished prior to. But that story might be so odd or unusual that the appeal exists only in the mind with the writer who developed it. Nobody else.

An example would be if a girl woke up a single morning, turned into a butterfly, and flew towards the land of Shangri-La. That is by no means been accomplished prior to but who cares? Mass appeal implies that nine out of ten individuals who you pitch your story to would say that they'd pay ten dollars to find out your film first run based solely in your pitch. It's important to make a decision either you're writing for the personal enjoyment or you're writing to sell. If it's to sell, then you will need to take the marketplace into account.
Requirement #3:
YOUR PITCH HAS To be STORY Specific
That implies that within your pitch, you will need to have certain information which make your story distinct and adds color and depth. Let's take the bank robbing plot. When you came up using a story about 3 individuals who would like to rob a bank by digging a tunnel underneath it, the response would be, "So what?" A twist on that genre may be the film Going In Style. It is about 3 senior citizens who try to rob a bank. The wheelman has had his license revoked, the lookout is visually impaired, as well as the brains with the operation is 75-year-old George Burns. Individuals certain information improve the story and hold it from becoming stale and generic. obat tradisional keputihan tk34
Requirement #4:
THE Potential IS Obvious
If you are pitching a comedy, then the prospective for humor needs to be clear within your pitch. Folks should smile or laugh while you inform it. If you are pitching an action film, the listener needs to be able to consider the action scenes in his head as your pitching. I sold a project to Miramax known as My Sort of Town together with the Wayans Brothers attached to star. It is about two guys who would like to make a brand new commence in life. They pack up their car or truck and take off with no specific destination in mind. Getting into City Hall in some tiny Southern town to obtain a map, the roof collapses on them and they sue. They win the lawsuit but the town can't afford to pay them so they're offered the town. The prospective for humor is clear when the Wayans Brothers are offered a Southern town to perform whatever they please with it.
Requirement #5:
YOUR PITCH Needs to be One particular TO Three SENTENCES Lengthy
Most pitches needs to be this length while some set-ups might be significantly more, but you should not go more than 5 to six sentences. You aren't telling what happens in Acts 1, 2 and three unless you're asked to perform so later. You're providing the premise of one's story. I've spent days shaping my loglines to contain as considerably information and facts in as handful of words as you possibly can.

I've had a large number of projects pitched to me in more than twenty years and writers mistakenly believe that the longer the pitch, the superior the story. Nobody wants to listen to a pitch that is a half hour extended when I could read the script in much less time. I inform writers "Pitch me your story inside a couple of sentences." Most can't because they don't know what the 5 requirements are and lack the practice in condensing and fine-tuning their pitches ahead of time.

When you're pitching, you are telling what your story is about, not what happens in the story. You don't would like to begin your pitch with, "My story is about a 26-year-old lady named Jill, who lives in Chicago. She's unhappy with her life. She goes to her office where she confronts her boss. She quits and goes home where she fights with her boyfriend." That may be not pitching. That may be a boring unfolding with the story which you should avoid at all fees.

The reaction you should hear while you pitch is "Wow! Why didn't I think of that?" or "That's so good why hasn't somebody made that film prior to?" When the faces in the space light up right after you deliver your pitch, you know you've got them. That is the sought right after "slam dunk." That is what High Notion is all about.
