Dementia Friendly Conference Shows Winning Way

Alzheimer?s Society is celebrating an award presented in recognition of a conference that opened a door to the world.

Earlier this year the Society co-hosted the 27th International Conference of Alzheimer?s Disease International at the ExCeL centre, London.

Now the event has earned a golden accolade for MCI, which organised the gathering on behalf of the charity and Alzheimer?s Disease International (ADI).

MCI gained the Association Conference of the Year title at a spectacular ceremony held by industry magazine C&IT in the capital?s Natural History Museum.

Ben Stanley, project manager for the winning three day conference, said:

?We could not have achieved the award without the support of ADI and the Alzheimer?s Society, which were both fantastic.?

He praised the Society for its contribution to the success of the conference and, in particular, the volunteers helping at the event ?who did a great job.?

Ben pointed to a series of measures put in place to assist delegates ? many living with dementia. The list included:

A robust and clear signage plan

  • Security staff briefed on how to help if anyone became disorientated or upset
  • Quiet room for delegates with dementia and carers to go when they needed space
  • Sensory indoor ?Garden of Memory? created.

A target of attracting 1,000 delegates was smashed with well over 1,600 people attending, while features included ADI 2012 TV screened in the venue and hotels.

Ben said:

?Sessions run by people with dementia were provided for the first time and very much impressed delegates. We will definitely continue that next year when the conference is in Taipei, Taiwan.?

Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive of Alzheimer?s Society, said:

?We worked closely with MCI and Alzheimer?s Disease International on creating a dementia friendly environment for the conference. It is magnificent to see recognition in the award for this important work on making sure people with dementia are centre stage. In the coming year Alzheimer?s Society is planning to work with many people and organisations to look at the broader opportunity to create dementia friendly communities.?
