Massachusetts Vote May Change How the Nation Dies

Cody Curtis, right, in How To Die in Oregon Cody Curtis, right, in How To Die in Oregon

Still from Clear Cut Films/IMDB.

This Election Day, Massachusetts is poised to approve the Death With Dignity Act. ?Death with dignity? is a modernized, sanitized, politically palatable term that replaces the now-antiquated expression ?physician-assisted suicide.? Four polls conducted in the past couple of months have shown strong support for the ballot question, although a well-funded media blitz by the opposition is kicking in during the final several weeks and may influence voter opinions.

Oregon?s Death With Dignity Act has been in effect for the past 14 years, and the state of Washington followed suit with a similar law in 2008. Despite concerns of skeptics, the sky has not fallen; civilization in the Northwest remains intact; the poor, disenfranchised, elderly, and vulnerable have not been victimized; and Oregon has become a leader in the provision of excellent palliative medicine services.

But the Massachusetts ballot question has the potential to turn death with dignity from a legislative experiment into the new national norm. The state is the home of America?s leading medical publication (the New England Journal of Medicine), hospital (Massachusetts General), and four medical schools (Harvard, Boston University, University of Massachusetts, and Tufts).? Passage of the law would represent a crucial milestone for the death with dignity movement, especially since 42 percent of the state is Catholic and the church hierarchy vehemently opposes assisted dying. Vermont and New Jersey are already entertaining similar legislature, and if the act passes in Massachusetts, other states that have previously had unsuccessful campaigns will certainly be emboldened to revisit this subject.

The American right-to-die movement began in the 1980s and 1990s with Derek Humphry?s book, Final Exit, and his organization, the Hemlock Society. It was a reaction to a wave of technological advances, including antibiotics, antifungal medications, ventilators, dialysis machines, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, organ transplantation, and intensive care units. Death appeared to be on the run, cure was truly possible, and patients were politely requested to be quiet and allow physicians to heroically perform miracles. And that is when Dr. Jack Kevorkian?the bad boy of medicine?appeared on the scene.

Kevorkian was a revolutionary. He was beloved by patients and their families because of his gutsy intention to overthrow the medical establishment?s prevailing ethos and hubris about dying. Clad in his nerdy, light-blue cardigan sweater, Kevorkian paraded in front of the cameras to show off homemade suicide gadgets and the Volkswagen van he occasionally drove on house calls to help suffering people end their lives. Before receiving an 11-to-20-year sentence for the second-degree murder of Thomas Youck, a 52-year-old Michigan accountant who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig?s disease), Judge Jessica Cooper said, ?You had the audacity to go on national television, show the world what you did and dare the legal system to stop you. Well sir, consider yourself stopped.?

So let?s fast forward to December 2007, when Cody Curtis was diagnosed with cholangiocarcinoma. This is an unusual and deadly cancer of the bile duct, the tube that runs through the liver. Depending on the size of the tumor and whether it has spread throughout the body, patients with this cancer are offered surgery, chemoradiation, and sometimes a liver transplant. Even with aggressive treatment, however, cholangiocarcinoma is usually a fatal diagnosis.

On a website called How We Die, Cody wrote with characteristic brio and wit:

It?s interesting how I was diagnosed?for my 52nd birthday I had gotten four, count them, four boxes of chocolate. And I ate them all. Afterwards I felt (deservedly) awful. I looked up my symptoms on the Internet and decided I was having a gall bladder attack like my father had earlier that year. It was a Saturday night so I didn?t want to go to the emergency room.

But I thought it was really weird, so a few weeks later I went in to see the doctor. She ordered an ultrasound. When I went back to her office to get the results, she looked at me and burst into tears. She said, ?Your gall bladder?s fine, but you have a big mass in your liver.? The tumor was roughly the size of a grapefruit.

Chinese Company YY Submits IPO Application In U.S.

Chinese social networking VoIP company YY Inc. is tempting fate with its just-submitted initial public offering application to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The Chinese technology company is seeking a listing on Nasdaq to raise USD100 million on the coattails of much scrutiny and disdain for Chinese-listed stocks in the United States. Over the last two years, some technology companies like Longtop suffered from accounting-related scandals, while other Greater China tech companies like Gigamedia and Tudou have suffered from ownership issues via their variable interest equity entity stakes in domestic Chinese enterprises. Chinese Web stocks like Sina.com, Sohu.com, and Netease.com are all trading today at more than 50% less than where they were 18-24 months ago.

So, with that as a backdrop, YY, who has been backed in the past by Morningside Ventures, Steamboat, GGV, and Tiger Fund, is attempting to make a go for an IPO in this negative environment.

YY operates both YY.com and Duowan.com. Its core product YY voice communication application, which can realize real-time communication by online voice, video, and text, was unveiled in July 2008. By September 2012, the application had gained 400.5 million registered users. In August 2012, the number of monthly active users was about 70.5 million.

During the first half of 2012, the company's net income increased to USD51.1 million, an increase of 173.2% compared with the USD18.86 million in the same period of 2011.

Sudan blames Israeli air strike hit for munitions plant blasts

KHARTOUM (Reuters) - Sudan said on Wednesday that an Israeli air strike had caused the huge explosion and fire at an arms factory in Khartoum that killed two people, while Israel's defense minister declined to comment.

Sudan, which analysts say is used as an arms-smuggling route to the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip via neighboring Egypt, has blamed Israel for such strikes in the past but Israel either has refused to comment or said it neither admitted or denied involvement.

Asked by Israel's Channel Two News about Sudan's accusations, Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak said: "There is nothing I can say about this subject."

A huge fire broke out late on Tuesday at the Yarmouk arms factory in the south of the capital which was rocked by several explosions, witnesses said. Firefighters took more than two hours to extinguish the fire at Sudan's main factory for ammunition and small arms.

"Four military planes attacked the Yarmouk plant ... We believe that Israel is behind it," Information Minister Ahmed Belal Osman told reporters, adding that the planes had appeared to approach the site from the east.

"Sudan reserves the right to strike back at Israel," he said, saying two citizens had been killed and that the plant had been partially destroyed. Another person was seriously injured, he added.

Around 300 people gathered in the evening at the courtyard of a government building where the Sudanese cabinet was meeting at an emergency session, shouting "Death to Israel" and "Remove Israel from the map."

"Israel is a country of injustice that needs to be deterred," Vice President Ali Osman Taha, standing next to President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, told the crowd. "This attack only strengthens our firmness."

The governor of Khartoum state initially had ruled out any "external" cause for the blast but officials later showed journalists a video from the vast site. A huge crater could be seen next to two destroyed buildings and what appeared to be a rocket lying on the ground.

Osman said an analysis of rocket debris and other material had shown that the attack had been engineered by Israel, which Sudan views as an enemy.

NOT FIRST ACCUSATION

Several residents living near the factory told Reuters they had heard planes or missiles before there was a huge explosion.

"I heard a sound like a plane or missile and then the sky was lit up and a huge explosion occurred," a resident who declined to be identified said. "There was a big fire and several subsequent explosions."

Two other residents said buildings near the plant had suffered minor damage.

Soldiers blocked access to the gated plant whose main buildings are located away from the main street, making it difficult to assess the damage when a Reuters reporter visited the area after the midnight blast and on Wednesday morning.

In May, Sudan's government said one person had been killed after a car exploded in the eastern city of Port Sudan. It said the explosion resembled a blast last year it had blamed on an Israeli missile strike.

Israel declined to comment on the May incident or the 2011 blast, which killed two people and neither admitted nor denied involvement in a similar incident in eastern Sudan in 2009.

The information minister declined to say whether any weapons from Yarmouk had ended up in Gaza, saying that only "traditional weapons in line with international law" were produced there.

Major damage to the Yarmouk plant would be a blow to Sudan's army in its battle against insurgencies in the western region of Darfur and the southern states of South Kordofan and Blue Nile, bordering arch-rival South Sudan.

In 1998, the United States fired missiles at the El Shifa medicine factory in Khartoum. U.S. officials said it was producing chemical weapons ingredients and was partly owned by Osama bin Laden, who used to live in Khartoum. Sudan insisted the plant made only pharmaceuticals.

The attack followed the bombings of U.S. embassies in Tanzania and Sudan's neighbor Kenya, which killed at least 226 people, including 12 Americans. The attacks were blamed on al Qaeda.

Grandmas made humans live longer: Chimp lifespan evolves into human longevity, computer simulation shows

ScienceDaily (Oct. 23, 2012) ? Computer simulations provide new mathematical support for the "grandmother hypothesis" -- a famous theory that humans evolved longer adult lifespans than apes because grandmothers helped feed their grandchildren.

"Grandmothering was the initial step toward making us who we are," says Kristen Hawkes, a distinguished professor of anthropology at the University of Utah and senior author of the new study published Oct. 24 by the British journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

The simulations indicate that with only a little bit of grandmothering -- and without any assumptions about human brain size -- animals with chimpanzee lifespans evolve in less than 60,000 years so they have a human lifespan. Female chimps rarely live past child-bearing years, usually into their 30s and sometimes their 40s. Human females often live decades past their child-bearing years.

The findings showed that from the time adulthood is reached, the simulated creatures lived another 25 years like chimps, yet after 24,000 to 60,000 years of grandmothers caring for grandchildren, the creatures who reached adulthood lived another 49 years -- as do human hunter-gatherers.

The grandmother hypothesis says that when grandmothers help feed their grandchildren after weaning, their daughters can produce more children at shorter intervals; the children become younger at weaning but older when they first can feed themselves and when they reach adulthood; and women end up with postmenopausal lifespans just like ours.

By allowing their daughters to have more children, a few ancestral females who lived long enough to become grandmothers passed their longevity genes to more descendants, who had longer adult lifespans as a result.

Hawkes conducted the new study with first author and mathematical biologist Peter Kim, a former University of Utah postdoctoral researcher now on the University of Sydney faculty, and James Coxworth, a University of Utah doctoral student in anthropology. The study was funded by the National Science Foundation and the Australian Research Council.

How Grandmothering Came to Be

Hawkes, University of Utah anthropologist James O'Connell and UCLA anthropologist Nicholas Blurton Jones formally proposed the grandmother hypothesis in 1997, and it has been debated ever since. Once major criticism was that it lacked a mathematical underpinning -- something the new study sought to provide.

The hypothesis stemmed from observations by Hawkes and O'Connell in the 1980s when they lived with Tanzania's Hazda hunter-gatherer people and watched older women spend their days collecting tubers and other foods for their grandchildren. Except for humans, all other primates and mammals collect their own food after weaning.

But as human ancestors evolved in Africa during the past 2 million years, the environment changed, growing drier with more open grasslands and fewer forests -- forests where newly weaned infants could collect and eat fleshy fruits on their own.

"So moms had two choices," Hawkes says. "They could either follow the retreating forests, where foods were available that weaned infants could collect, or continue to feed the kids after the kids are weaned. That is a problem for mothers because it means you can't have the next kid while you are occupied with this one."

That opened a window for the few females whose childbearing years were ending -- grandmothers -- to step in and help, digging up potato-like tubers and cracking hard-shelled nuts in the increasingly arid environment. Those are tasks newly weaned apes and human ancestors couldn't handle as infants.

The primates who stayed near food sources that newly weaned offspring could collect "are our great ape cousins," says Hawkes. "The ones that began to exploit resources little kids couldn't handle, opened this window for grandmothering and eventually evolved into humans."

Evidence that grandmothering increases grandchildren's survival is seen in 19th and 20th century Europeans and Canadians, and in Hazda and some other African people.

But it is possible that the benefits grandmothers provide to their grandchildren might be the result of long postmenopausal lifespans that evolved for other reasons, so the new study set out to determine if grandmothering alone could result in the evolution of ape-like life histories into long postmenopausal lifespans seen in humans.

Simulating the Evolution of Adult Lifespan

The new study isn't the first to attempt to model or simulate the grandmother effect. A 1998 study by Hawkes and colleagues took a simpler approach, showing that grandmothering accounts for differences between humans and modern apes in life-history events such as age at weaning, age at adulthood and longevity.

A recent simulation by other researchers said there were too few females living past their fertile years for grandmothering to affect lifespan in human ancestors. The new study grew from Hawkes' skepticism about that finding.

Unlike Hawkes' 1998 study, the new study simulated evolution over time, asking, "If you start with a life history like the one we see in great apes -- and then you add grandmothering, what happens?" Hawkes says.

The simulations measured the change in adult longevity -- the average lifespan from the time adulthood begins. Chimps that reach adulthood (age 13) live an average of another 15 or 16 years. People in developed nations who reach adulthood (at about age 19) live an average of another 60 years or so -- to the late 70s or low 80s.

The extension of adult lifespan in the new study involves evolution in prehistoric time; increasing lifespans in recent centuries have been attributed largely to clean water, sewer systems and other public health measures.

The researchers were conservative, making the grandmother effect "weak" by assuming that a woman couldn't be a grandmother until age 45 or after age 75, that she couldn't care for a child until age 2, and that she could care only for one child and that it could be any child, not just her daughter's child.

Based on earlier research, the simulation assumed that any newborn had a 5 percent chance of a gene mutation that could lead to either a shorter or a longer lifespan.

The simulation begins with only 1 percent of women living to grandmother age and able to care for grandchildren, but by the end of the 24,000 to 60,000 simulated years, the results are similar to those seen in human hunter-gatherer populations: about 43 percent of adult women are grandmothers.

The new study found that from adulthood, additional years of life doubled from 25 years to 49 years over the simulated 24,000 to 60,000 years.

The difference in how fast the doubling occurred depends on different assumptions about how much a longer lifespan costs males: Living longer means males must put more energy and metabolism into maintaining their bodies longer, so they put less vigor into competing with other males over females during young adulthood. The simulation tested three different degrees to which males are competitive in reproducing.

What Came First: Bigger Brains or Grandmothering?

The competing "hunting hypothesis" holds that as resources dried up for human ancestors in Africa, hunting became better than foraging for finding food, and that led to natural selection for bigger brains capable of learning better hunting methods and clever use of hunting weapons. Women formed "pair bonds" with men who brought home meat.

Many anthropologists argue that increasing brain size in our ape-like ancestors was the major factor in humans developing lifespans different from apes. But the new computer simulation ignored brain size, hunting and pair bonding, and showed that even a weak grandmother effect can make the simulated creatures evolve from chimp-like longevity to human longevity.

So Hawkes believes the shift to longer adult lifespan caused by grandmothering "is what underlies subsequent important changes in human evolution, including increasing brain size."

"If you are a chimpanzee, gorilla or orangutan baby, your mom is thinking about nothing but you," she says. "But if you are a human baby, your mom has other kids she is worrying about, and that means now there is selection on you -- which was not on any other apes -- to much more actively engage her: 'Mom! Pay attention to me!'"

"Grandmothering gave us the kind of upbringing that made us more dependent on each other socially and prone to engage each other's attention," she adds.

That, says Hawkes, gave rise to "a whole array of social capacities that are then the foundation for the evolution of other distinctly human traits, including pair bonding, bigger brains, learning new skills and our tendency for cooperation."

Sony teases '4K, HFR' F-series pro camcorder for October 30th event

Sony recently teased its high-end CineAlta brand and 'TheNewF,' implying a high-end PMW-F3-like camcorder could be coming at an October 30th event. It's now taken some of the suspense out of the announcement on Facebook, saying the upcoming camera will have 4k resolution, broadcast-level 50Mbps data rate, 4:2:2 color space and high frame-rates. That means it'll likely be a professional product on par with the last F-model, but we'll have to wait and see if it'll retain features like the PL lens mount and $16k price tag. We'll be there on the 30th for the full scoop, so stay tuned.

Judge falls after seeing Gilles' 'DWTS' moves

ABC

Carrie Ann Inaba falls out of her chair after watching Gilles Marini's rumba on "Dancing With the Stars."

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

It's no surprise that easy-on-the-eyes actor Gilles Marini leaves fans swooning, but it certainly came as a shock when the all-star's latest moves sent one judge crashing to the floor on "Dancing With the Stars."

During Monday night's abbreviated installment of the ballroom bash, Gilles delivered a remarkably sexy rumba alongside pro partner Peta Murgatroyd. He somehow managed to maintain the rhythm of the dance despite the lack of music in the opening half of his guilty-pleasure song pick, Whitney Houston's "I Will Always Love You." Once the chords kicked in, it just got better.

The crowd was so impressed with the routine, they leapt to their feet mid-dance. And judge Carrie Ann Inaba couldn't exactly remain seated either.

"Let the baby making begin!" Carrie Ann exclaimed in a nod to Gilles' promise to inspire plenty of sexy-time with the performance. But no sooner had she said that than her own enthusiasm got the better of her, and she fell right out of her chair.

Gilles kept up his leading-man-worthy moves by rushing to Carrie Ann's aid, helping her up and giving her a quick kiss. But suddenly her condition seemed contagious.

"Me too! Me too!" fellow panelist Bruno Tonioli cried, as he flopped across the judges' table. Gilles rewarded him with a smooch for his theatrical efforts.

The performance -- and perhaps that post-dance triage -- earned the star 29.5 points for the night and the top spot on the leaderboard.

But Gilles wasn't the only attention-getter of the one-hour show. Former champ Emmitt Smith had the in-house audience on their feet during his "Copacabana"-themed samba too.

After weeks of lackluster dances from the retired Hall of Famer, Emmitt reminded "Dancing" fans of all those hip-shaking and shimmying moves he mastered back in season three. It was easily his strongest dance in the competition so far this season.

A recovered Carrie Ann told Emmitt he had "samba swagger," and despite a slight hitch in his timing early on in the number, she and the other judges gave him his best marks this season with a score just one point shy of perfection.

And while actress Kirstie Alley found herself a little farther down the leaderboard than the guys, the night was still a success for her. A quickstep, set to guilty pleasure "Mrs. Robinson," saw Kirstie clip across the floor with great musicality -- and maybe just a little trepidation. The routine was actually less lively than some of the crowd-pleasers she's offered up, but the judges were more interested in seeing some smooth moves from her.

She delivered, and they gave her 25.5 -- another personal high for the "All-Stars."

That left Kelly Monaco as the back-of-the-pack contender for the night with a slightly stiff samba. The 24.5-point dance marked the first time the soap star found herself pulling up the rear all season. And even though the performance wasn't up to her usual standards, it hardly seemed to rate all of the negativity it sparked from the panel.

Head judge Len Goodman criticized the dance for "too much gyrating" and leaning "too much on the raunchy side" for his tastes. Bruno suggested Kelly's bounces appeared "false." And Carrie Ann felt the actress was tense up top (but "working it" down below).

But if the judges seemed a bit tough on Kelly, they certainly were over their nitpicking ways for the last dance of the night.

The first team freestyle to be featured on the show saw Shawn Johnson, Sabrina Bryan, Apolo Anton Ohno and an injured Melissa Rycroft (and their respective pros) hit the floor for a sporty take in ballroom. The men were the jocks, the women were the cheerleaders and together they kicked, leapt and jumped their way through a high-energy -- and at times imprecise -- group effort.

The transition between couples marked the high points of the dance, but judges loved it all.

Bruno claimed it was hard to tell the pros from the stars before he and his fellow panelist handed out a score of 29.5 points.

But that's not all! Well, it was all for Monday night, but on Tuesday night, the performances continue. Rather than a results show, the ballroom will host the second part of the guilty pleasures routines and yet another team dance.

Whose guilty-pleasure performance was the best of the night? Take our poll below and then share your thoughts about the show on our Facebook page. And be sure to join us and ?your fellow "DWTS" fans on Monday at 8 ET to chat about the all-stars' performances!

Dementia Friendly Conference Shows Winning Way

Alzheimer?s Society is celebrating an award presented in recognition of a conference that opened a door to the world.

Earlier this year the Society co-hosted the 27th International Conference of Alzheimer?s Disease International at the ExCeL centre, London.

Now the event has earned a golden accolade for MCI, which organised the gathering on behalf of the charity and Alzheimer?s Disease International (ADI).

MCI gained the Association Conference of the Year title at a spectacular ceremony held by industry magazine C&IT in the capital?s Natural History Museum.

Ben Stanley, project manager for the winning three day conference, said:

?We could not have achieved the award without the support of ADI and the Alzheimer?s Society, which were both fantastic.?

He praised the Society for its contribution to the success of the conference and, in particular, the volunteers helping at the event ?who did a great job.?

Ben pointed to a series of measures put in place to assist delegates ? many living with dementia. The list included:

A robust and clear signage plan

Warehouse operator faces new labor complaint

Warehouse Workers United / via FairWarning

Warehouse workers on strike last month against NFI.

By Lilly Fowler, FairWarning

Months after settling complaints of unfair labor practices, a big warehouse operator in Southern California is facing new charges accusing it of illegally firing or reducing the hours of workers who took part in a strike and protest march.

The latest charges, which come from 33 workers, are in a complaint submitted last week to the National Labor Relations Board. It takes aim at NFI, a subsidiary of New Jersey-based National Distribution Centers.

The complaint alleges that NFI?s warehouse in Mira Loma, a community in the Inland Empire region east of Los Angeles, illegally punished workers who joined in a 15-day September job walkout. The workers were protesting what they said were unsafe working conditions and previous acts of employment retaliation.

Also named in the complaint is WareStaff, an employment company that supplied many of the Mira Loma warehouse workers to NFI.

The charges stem from a long-running union campaign to organize hundreds of thousands of mostly low-wage workers in the supply chain for retailing giant Walmart. The effort is being coordinated by Warehouse Workers United, an organization launched in 2007 by Change to Win, a national coalition of unions with about five million members.

As FairWarning reported in March in a story on alleged labor abuses in the Inland Empire?s vast warehouse industry, most of the workers are directly hired as temporary employees by intermediary firms such as WareStaff. The arrangement is meant to shield WalMart from liability for safety and wage law violations and frustrate unionizing efforts, worker advocates say.

NFI spokeswoman Kathleen Hessert said the company is reviewing last week?s complaint to the National Labor relations board. She accused Warehouse Workers United of ?distorting facts and misleading anyone who will listen.? NFI values its employees, Hessert said, and ?just doesn?t do business this way.? WareStaff officials could not be reached.

Without admitting liability, NFI in May settled previous retaliation claims by six workers at three warehouses in Chino, Calif. As part of the settlement, NFI agreed to rehire most ?of the workers and provide back pay, said Elizabeth Brennan, a spokeswoman for Warehouse Workers United.

Other complaints of unfair labor practices, filed in July and August against NFI and WareStaff, are also pending before the labor relations board.

The workers bringing the latest charges include Andrew Sims, a 23-year-old father of four who said he makes $8 an hour at the Mira Loma NFI warehouse. Sims, who has worked at the warehouse about six months, unloads goods from containers that arrive from Asia at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach. He also loads boxes onto trucks bound for WalMart stores.

Sims said his hours were slashed after he participated in the September strike, which included a six-day, 50-mile protest march from the Inland Empire to downtown Los Angeles.

Last week, Sims said, he was given only four hours of work by WareStaff ? down from an average of about 35 hours a week previously.

Warehouse workers in the Inland Empire have also recently filed two sets of safety complaints with the California Division of Occupation Safety and Health, or Cal/OSHA, regarding NFI?s Mira Loma warehouse. The complaints allege hazards such as blocked emergency exits and lack of safety training for operators of forklifts and other equipment. Cal/OSHA officials declined to comment on the status of the cases.

In yet another case, Cal/OSHA in January charged NFI and the hiring agency Tri-State Staffing with more than 60 safety violations at four warehouses in Chino. NFI and Tri-Staff are appealing the citations and $256,445 in proposed penalties.

The flurry of union-organizing activity in the Inland Empire has extended to warehouse and distribution hubs in other parts of the country. Sims, along with other warehouse workers from Illinois, met earlier this week with Walmart management at company headquarters in Bentonville, Ark, to discuss working conditions.

Walmart spokesman Dan Fogleman said the company plans to respond to the workers and pass on their information to their employers.

?We continue to take this matter seriously because it?s important to us that workers in our supply chain are treated with dignity and respect,? he said.

Separately, about 90 Walmart workers scattered across more than 12 urban areas, including the Los Angeles area, staged a strike against the retailer last week over working conditions.

FairWarning?is a nonprofit, online investigative news organization focused on safety and health issues.?

Google's $8 Billion Mobile Business Comes With Caveats - AllThingsD

iStockphoto | maybefalse

The first news nugget from Google?s earnings call today: The company says it?s now on pace to generate $8 billion a year from mobile, up from $2.5 billion a year ago.

Big jump! But there?s a catch: Last year?s number was solely from mobile advertising. This year?s number includes mobile ads along with gross revenue from media sold through the company?s Google Play store, as well as the gross revenue from app sales.

So: Big number, but unless Google wants to break it down, hard to tell how meaningful it is.

(Update: Later in the call, CFO Patrick Pichette tells analysts the ?vast majority? of that $8 billion comes from ads.)

Korean Short Ribs: How DALSian is That? ? Dinner: A Love Story

I?d like to introduce you to a new word: DALSian. It is defined as follows:

[DAHLS'-ee-uhn] adj ? used to describe a recipe displaying hallmarks of blog Dinner: A Love Story; simple, fresh, un-intimidating, frequently strategy-driven and generally requiring key ingredients found in non-fetishy food person?s pantry.

Naturally, I?d like to think every recipe on DALS is DALSian, but there are many that seem to deserve the title more obviously than most. (And a few who deserve it less: we ?d get bored superfast if it weren?t for edible flowers on pizza,?Maya Kaimal?s chicken curry,?and Bugiali?s high-maintenance, high-happiness Minestrone every now and then.)

A few DALSian champs that come to my mind immediately: Pretzel Chicken, Pomegranate-Juice-Braised Pork with Cabbage, Tony?s Steak,?Salmon Salad. Some of these, like the pork, I discover by accident; others, like the salmon salad, are tweaked over years and years through tantrums and tantrums. But often, like the Pretzel Chicken, the recipes are sent to me by readers.

Which brings me to the latest dish to be crowned with the title: Korean Short Ribs.

Can you please take a look at the photo up there? That?s pretty much all I needed to make a big pot of them for a showstopping potluck centerpiece this past weekend. The recipe came from reader Anna with the following note:

i just read the tumultuous tuesdays post and felt compelled to email you my top ten crockpot meals.? i send it to all our family and friends when they have a baby.? if they live in town, i print it off and include it with some freezer meals for their family.? if they don?t and i know they don?t own a crockpot, i email the file and send a crockpot from target.? it?s getting the be the season where we all think about using the crockpot. so, enjoy!

xo, anna

Now, first of all, how jealous are you of her friends? And of me ? who gets delicious dinner ideas regularly sent to my inbox from nice people in Nebraska! Anna is not just a reader, of course. Besides being the woman behind?Clementines Produce & Provisions, she won the Weeknight Recipe Contest a few year?s back ? her Kale, White Bean, and Sausage Stew was so DALSian, it made it into my book. I don?t own a crockpot, but I opened up the file and immediately lasered in on the third recipe listed, those aforementioned ribs. You wanna talk DALSian? This recipe listed five ingredients ? one of which was water ? and one line of instruction. I decided then and there to translate it to my Dutch Oven to see what would happen. This is what happened:

This photo was taken while daylight was still good ? the ribs would cook down another hour or so until the beef was rich and melty and the salty-sweet sauce dark and thick. The only problem was that I had somehow neglected to realize that the younger diners attending the potluck might be inclined to eat it too. In my head, like a dummy, I had earmarked it for the adults only (how have I not learned this lesson?) and watched as kid after kid decimated their portion, leaving a scant single rib for each adult diner.

But I guess of all the criteria that define a DALSian dinner, ?kid-friendly? should probably be right at the top of the list.

Korean Short Ribs (the no-slow-cooker version)
The only change I made to Anna?s was replacing jalapenos with Sriracha (I didn?t have jalapenos) and next time I might add a few slices of fresh ginger in the braising liquid because?well, why not? As Andy would say, it?s not like it?s going to be bad.

1 T. canola or vegetable oil
3-4 pounds beef short ribs, salted and peppered (I used a combination of bone-in and boneless ? don?t ask ? but I prefer all boneless)
1 c. of brown sugar
1 c. soy sauce, low sodium
? c. water
2 teaspoons Sriracha
scallions for garnish

Heat oven to 325?F. In a Dutch Oven set over medium-high heat, add oil, then brown short ribs in batches. Whisk together remaining ingredients and add to the pot with all the beef. (The meat should be almost fully immersed when you begin, and then cook down as you go. But keep an eye on liquid ? it should be at least a third of the way up the pot. If it?s not, add a mix of 1 part water to 1 part soy, a little at a time.) Bring to a boil, then reduce to a simmer. Cover, leaving lid slightly ajar, and place inside oven. Cook 3 to 4 hours, flipping ribs every 30 minutes or so, until liquid has thickened and meat is falling off the bone. Serve topped with chopped scallions.

PS: How?s this for awesome? Anna has posted not only the slow-cooker version of this for you crockpot owners, but her entire Top Ten Slow-Cooker File. Head over to her site to download. You rock, Anna!

NARBERTH, Pa. (AP) ? Friends and former colleagues, including Vice President Joe Biden, two former Pennsylvania governors, judges and others on Tuesday mourned the loss of former U.S. Sen. Arlen Specter, calling him an "irreplaceable" man who was so determined to beat a string of illnesses that he managed to teach one last law class less than two weeks before his death.

Biden, former Govs. Ed Rendell and Dick Thornburgh, and other power brokers from various walks of life were among hundreds attending the funeral in a Philadelphia suburb to pay their respects. Specter died at his suburban home on Sunday at 82 after battling non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

U.S. District Judge Jan DuBois, a law school friend of Specter's, recalled how Specter approached everything in life "with intensity, determination and grit," managing to teach one last law class on Oct. 4 at the University of Pennsylvania Law School on the relationship between Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court.

Biden said he'd never seen someone with as much "undaunted courage" as Specter. He said his former Senate colleague's fights with cancer should give hope to all families battling the disease.

"He believed he could change the world, if he just worked hard enough at it," Biden said.

Specter, a political moderate who switched parties twice in his career but mostly served as a Republican, was also recalled for his independent streak.

"He really set the standard for working across party lines and we're going to miss that," U.S. Sen. Bob Casey said, adding that Specter taught him a lot when he joined the Senate.

Anthony J. Scirica, the chief judge on the 3rd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, called Specter "irreplaceable."

"He touched so many lives," Scirica said. "He had some tough times, but he always thought that he was working for the public good."

"He was a staunch friend of judiciary and of keeping the judges free from political influence," he said.

Specter had won his Senate seat in the Reagan landslide of 1980 and, as one of the Senate's sharpest legal minds, took part in 14 Supreme Court confirmation hearings. Earlier in his career, he had served as counsel to the Warren Commission investigating Kennedy's death, and prosecuted Teamsters officials in Philadelphia as an assistant district attorney.

He fought two previous bouts with Hodgkin lymphoma, and also overcame a brain tumor and cardiac arrest following bypass surgery.

Specter is survived by his wife, Joan, sons Shanin and Steve, and four granddaughters.
