Facebook just made your photos even bigger

12 hrs.

When it comes to the photos you share,?Facebook is going big. The changes, which start gradually rolling out today?to all users, truly give the social network more of a photo album feel.

When you?click "Photos" at the top of your timeline, you'll see larger pictures "that fill up the page," wrote Emily Grewal, a?Facebook product manager, in a posting.

You can also use the menu to look for photos you're tagged in, photos you've shared as well as albums you've created.

Friends can "like" and comment all from that one?page.?

"With your Facebook photos all in one section, it's simple to show friends your favorites," Grewal wrote. "Click the star button to make important photos stand out" and appear bigger.

Box raises $125 million at $1.2 billion valuation - Business Insider

Box.net

In 2005, Aaron Levie entered a college business plan competition. One year later, he launched an enterprise file sharing and storing company called Box.

Today, Box has raised a big $125 million growth round according to AllThingsD's Arik Hesseldahl. The company is now worth $1.2 billion. Not bad for a 27-year-old CEO.

Business Insider first reported the financing in May.

Box has raised $284 million to date -- about $30 million more than its file sharing and storing competitor Dropbox which has a $4 billion valuation and an equally young founder, 29-year-old Drew Houston.

General Atlantic, a Facebook investor, led Box's funding round. Social + Capital Partnership, an investment firm started by early Facebook employee Chamath Palihapitiya, also participated along with two other institutional investors.

Gary Reiner, General Electric's former CIO and current operating partner at GA is joining Box's board.

Box has about 500 employees and is reportedly gearing up for an IPO during 2013. But both CEO Aaron Levie and General Atlantic say an IPO isn't on their minds just yet.

"We can do way more as a private company than we can as a public company,? Levie tells AllThingsD. ?Taking this round gives us the foundation to build the foundation we need.?

Startup claims many of Facebook?s ad clicks driven by bots

Startup Limited Run says bots are driving clicks on its Facebook ads.?

A startup is making some dramatic claims about Facebook, saying that bots, not real people, are the driving force behind clicks on its Facebook ads.

In addition, the startup says Facebook wouldn?t change the startup?s name on its Facebook page without committing to buying $2,000 per month in ads, a move the startup described as a shake down.

?That was kind of the last straw,? said Tom Mango, co-founder of the startup Limited Run, when I caught up with him by phone. ?We have to get out of Facebook.?

Limited Run, which is based in New York and makes a platform for musicians and artists to sell physical and digital goods, posted its story about its experience Monday in a Facebook post explaining why the company is shutting down its account.

Mango said that the company noticed the numbers of ad clicks it was paying for didn?t align with the number of visits to its website, according to the analytics service it was using. So Mango spent a month testing six or seven other analytics services, all with the same result: Only about 20 percent of the clicks the company was paying for were making it through to its website.

Limited Run then set up its own tracking system, and says it found that those other clicks were all coming from bots, driving up the startup?s advertising costs.

?We have no idea where the bots are from,? Mango said. ?Our biggest thing is we don?t have time to deal with this kind of crap. We wanted to be able to advertise on Facebook, but we?re small. We can?t afford to put money out there and not actually get our return on it.?

When the company asked Facebook about the discrepancy, it got ?standard canned replies about every analytics service is different,? Mango said.

SA To Cash In On Africa Energy Boom

Posted on Jul. 27, 2012 From Business Report

South Africa?s budding energy service industry is aiming to reap the benefits of new natural gas and oil finds along Africa?s east coast, where geographical proximity gives it the edge over other hubs in Europe, Singapore and Dubai.

Located at the foot of Africa along a major shipping route, South Africa is well placed to take advantage of increased exploration by global energy companies in East Africa, where large gas discoveries over the past year have excited global interest.

NASA rover closing in on Mars to hunt for life clues

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida | Sun Jul 29, 2012 5:13pm EDT

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida (Reuters) - NASA's Mars rover was on its final approach to the red planet on Sunday, heading toward a mountain that may hold clues about whether life has ever existed on Mars, officials said.

The rover, also known as Curiosity, has been careening toward Mars since its launch in November. The nuclear-powered rover the size of a compact car is expected to end its 352-million-mile (567-million-km) journey on August 6 at 1:31 a.m. EDT.

The landing zone is a 12-mile-by-4-mile (20-km-by-7-km) area inside an ancient impact basin known as Gale Crater, located near the planet's equator. The crater, one of the lowest places on Mars, has a 3-mile-high (5-km-high) mountain of what appears to be layers of sediment.

Scientists suspect the crater may have once been the floor of a lake.

If so, they believe that sediments likely filled the crater, but were carried away over time, leaving only the central mound.

Readying to travel the last stretch to its landing site, Curiosity fired its steering thrusters for six seconds early Sunday, tweaking its flight path by 0.4 inches (1 centimeter) per second.

"I will not be surprised if this was our last trajectory correction maneuver," chief navigator Tomas Martin-Mur, with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in a statement.

Curiosity is expected to hit the top of the Martian atmosphere at 1:24 a.m. EDT on August 6. If all goes as planned, seven minutes later the rover will be standing on its six wheels on the dry, dusty surface of Mars.

Landing is by no means guaranteed. To transport the one-ton rover and position it near the mound, engineers devised a complicated system that includes a 52-foot (16-metre) diameter supersonic parachute, a rocket-powered aerial platform and a so-called "sky crane" designed to lower the rover on a tether to the ground.

NASA last week successfully repositioned its Mars-orbiting Odyssey spacecraft so that it would be able to monitor Curiosity's descent and landing and radio the information back to ground controllers in as close to real time as possible.

Earth and Mars are so far apart that radio signals, which travel at the speed of light, take 13.8 minutes for a one-way journey.

Finance Money Monitor: Explain Medical Bankruptcies Up - Typepad

American Mailbox (Wakulla County, Florida) .. Walk Away From Debt For a Better Future by marsmet461Perhaps you are unaware or maybe you have indeed heard the statistic that 50% of all personal bankruptcies are caused due to medical bills. Often, far too often the folks actually had medical insurance, but the co-pays, deductibles or items not covered exceeded the ability of the patient or the patient?s family ability to pay. Most of these medical debtors were not lower class, rather middle class. The upper middle and upper class was able to weather the storm and onslaught of medical bills much easier. This tells us one thing, it tells us that the healthcare system is out of control and completely broken.

Health Law?s Flaws Will Spur Drive for Single

The health reform will leave 26 million uninsured even when it?s fully implemented, and force tens of millions to buy lousy coverage from private insurers. Instead of cutting out the insurance middlemen who caused the health care crisis, Obamacare hands them a trillion-dollar windfall from federal subsidies, mandated premiums and Medicaid managed-care contracts.

The Affordable Care Act and Medical Bankruptcy

In the short-term, the ball is in Minnesota?s court. According to rules issued by HHS, states will be responsible for determining whether or not the ACA-mandated exchanges will be ?active purchasers? or an ?open marketplace.? Exchanges that are active purchasers will be able to extract concessions from insurers while an open marketplace allows all insurance plans that meet the ACA?s requirements to be sold on the exchange. By being aggressive and establishing an active purchasing exchange that can negotiate for low deductibles and larger benefits, Minnesota can control costs and prevent some medical bankruptcies.

Will Health Care Reform Mean Fewer Bankruptcy Filings?

As you probably heard, last Thursday the Supreme Court ruled on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as ?Obamacare?.? The court found the Act to be constitutional.? This decision means that should the Act stay in place, over the next few years many new changes will be enacted in an attempt to provide affordable healthcare to every American and to reform the healthcare insurance industry.? Politics aside, many questions remain about exactly how this Act will affect the country.? Specifically, we at Lakelaw are wondering what the effect of PPACA will be on bankruptcy.

When You Should File Medical Bankruptcy

But given the nature of medical conditions that often require ongoing treatment and costs, it is important you file for bankruptcy at the correct time. This is because bankruptcy can only discharge debts that have already been incurred, not those that are yet to be incurred. The last thing you would want is to incur hefty medical bills after you exit bankruptcy. You will not be allowed to file for bankruptcy protection until several years have passed. Thus all debts incurred after your bankruptcy is over are yours to bear.

Health Insurance May not Prevent Medical Related Bankruptcies

?Medical expenses have made up a significant number of bankruptcies for almost twenty-five years,? said Tampa bankruptcy attorney, Reginald Osenton of the Osenton Law Offices. ?With more high-? deductibles or employers shifting to higher deductible group health plans to save money, a lot of people with health insurance are still at risk of hitting financial hardship.?

What Fraction of Bankruptcies Is Caused By Medical Debt?

We don?t have to look very far for an answer. It seems that the authors are reluctant to take their respondents seriously when it comes to an understanding of their indebtedness. The survey clearly states that only 29 percent of the respondents believed that their bankruptcy was actually caused by medical bills. This number sounds like a reasonable approximation of the actual impact of medical debt on bankruptcies. In fact, it accords well with other findings in the literature, including my own. In an AEI working paper, I showed that when medical debts (as a fraction of income) rise by 10 percent, we are likely to observe an increase in bankruptcy filings induced by those debts by approximately 27 percent. In other words, if between 2001 and 2007, medical debts increased by about 10 percent (as a fraction of income), the study suggests that about 27 percent of the total filings during this period can be attributed to medical debts. The SCF shows that for all families, total debts as a fraction of income actually have increased by roughly that 10 percent figure over this period. Therefore, even if all of this increase was due to medical debts (which is unlikely since mortgage debts are ten times higher), the additional bankruptcy filings due to medical debts should be 27 percent of the total. Another paper by Domowitz and Sartain estimates the fraction of medical bankruptcies at about 30 percent, half of what the Warren study finds.

As figure 3 demonstrates, Medicare is the most profligate entitlement program in the world. In a review of the literature, Levy and Meltzer identified three high-quality studies examining the Medicare population and the effect Medicare had on health outcomes. They found that ?Medicare increases consumption of medical care and may modestly improve self-reported health but has no effect on mortality.?[7] Finkelstein and McKnight used data from the 1960s to see whether geographic areas with lower insurance coverage rates prior to the enactment of Medicare experienced improvements in mortality following the enactment of Medicare relative to areas with higher pre-1965 coverage rates. They found that while hospital utilization and spending increased significantly, ?In its first 10 years, the establishment of universal health insurance for the elderly had no discernible impact on their mortality.?[8] These findings are consistent with those of the RAND health-insurance experiment and reinforce the notion that medical care plays a relatively limited role in one?s overall health.

Medical debt bankruptcies may be avoided with these tactics

If you were covered by health insurance during your care and are unable to afford the associated copays, you may be able to eliminate the need to pay these if you can show that you are doing your best to repay them. Try writing a letter directly to your service provider and explain your situation. After making a case for yourself, request that your copays be waived and your bill be considered paid in full so that your financial situation does not become worse. Remind the provider that you were covered by health insurance and that most of the costs have already been paid by your coverage.
