RIM expects loss, plans 'significant' job cuts

David Manning / REUTERS

RIM's CEO Thorsten Heins is silhouetted during a BlackBerry event in Orlando in early May.

By Roland Jones

Updated at 5 p.m. ET: Research in Motion, which revolutionized the mobile industry with the once-ubiquitous BlackBerry, is racing against time as it tries to launch a new line of smart phones while struggling to remain afloat.

Amid reports that the company plans to eliminate at least 2,000 jobs, RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said late Tuesday that the next few quarters will be "challenging" and that the company had hired two investment banks to review its operations.

Heins also said in a?statement?that the company expects to post an operating loss for the current fiscal quarter, which ends next week. RIM shares fell sharply in after-hours trading on the news.

Heins said the company is moving ahead with plans for "significant" headcount reductions in an effort to save $1 billion in annual expenses, although he did not confirm reports tha the company plans to eliminate at least 2,000 jobs across its worldwide operations, according to some reports. RIM has about 16,500 employees worldwide.

But analysts are doubtful that the maker of the BlackBerry, a one-time darling of Canada?s technology industry, can shrink enough, or become competitive enough, to fend off the stiff challenge it faces from Apple?s iPhone and Google?s Android software.

?We maintain that the only path for RIM is to partner with someone, to be acquired, or to turn themselves into a software company, and I think that path with become very clear to the management team by the end of the year,? said Jefferies & Company analyst Peter Misek, who covers wireless companies.

RIM has faced declining market share and revenue in recent years as smartphone devices such as iPhones and Androids have soared ahead of BlackBerrys.

The Canadian company is pinning its recovery hopes on the launch of the Blackberry 10 -- the next-generation mobile platform that will power a suite of new smartphones that is expected to hit the market later this year.

Analysts such as Jim Moorman of S&P Capital IQ are questioning whether the launch of the new operating system will arrive too late to take back market share lost to industry heavyweights like Apple, Google and Samsung.

Moorman notes that the much-anticipated -- and delayed -- Blackberry 10 launch will come around the same time that Samsung, HTC and Apple are due to launch updated smartphones.

?This is not a good moment for [RIM] to launch a new product,? he said. ?This raises concerns for me. It?s an already delayed launch and it?s going to be coming out in the middle of some other key product launches.?

RIM faces other headwinds, Moorman notes, including a declining subscriber base. RIM has added new subscribers to its services at a healthy clip of around 4.5 million users per quarter for the last seven quarters, but that pace slipped to 2.9 million in the most recent quarter, he said.

Related: RIM to cut thousands in global restructuring -- reports

At the same time, sales of BlackBerry devices are declining, down 6.5 percent in the last fiscal year, ended March, from the year before, Moorman said. And the company is expected to soon make a third huge writedown on unsold smartphones and PlayBook tablets, analysts say.

The strengths of RIM?s BlackBerry are its long batter life and security, both of which are benefits to business travelers, Moorman notes, but he adds that other device makers are begging to chip away at RIM?s ?special sauce,? improving the batter life of their devices. And a series of high-profile global network outages for BlackBerry might have turned off some business customers.

RIM also faces perennial problems at the C-suite level, analysts say. After RIM?s co-CEOs Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie stepped down from their leadership roles earlier this year, a new CEO, Thorsten Heins, who was a relatively unknown executive at the company, stepped forward.

Despite the new leadership, analysts say the company faces the same old problems, including fierce competition, chronic delays on its new technology launches and a brand that has lost its standing among consumers.

?It seems the new management team is set on rebuilding the company?s brand with the BlackBerry 10 platform,? said Moorman. ?I think it will be a struggle for them. I think we?ll continue to see RIM muddle through, but it will be a tough battle.?

?I think RIM will continue to bleed for a while, unless the share price gets so cheap that they become an acquisition target, but that?s not what the company wants,? he added. ?They are probably just waiting to see how the launch of BlackBerry 10 goes.?

Anindya Ghose, an associate professor of management at New York University?s Stern School of Business, reckons RIM needs a new, visionary leader to help the company pull out of its tailspin.

?To put it bluntly, they need someone like Steve Jobs,? he said.

Ghose points to when Steve Jobs returned to Apple in the late 1990s after having been thrown out 10 years earlier. He was faced with a company with low morale, stagnant sales and little sense of direction, and instituted radical changes to turn the company around.

?You need a visionary like him,? Ghose said.

Jefferies? Misek says RIM would do well to turn their hardware business into a niche company and offer its smart phone software to other handset makers, such as Apple. At this point the likelihood of RIM being acquired by another company looks slim, he added.

?Is there value that can be found in these assets?? he asked.

?With a market cap of about $6 billion and net cash of about $2 billion, its enterprise value is $4 billion,? Misek said.

?If that?s not enticing enough for someone to buy this company I don?t know what is. Basically, if you pay a 25 percent premium, you can buy Research in Motion for $5 billion dollars right now, and that?s a very reasonable price. So it?s already cheap and it?s not attracting any buyers,? he added.

Could Nonprofit Health Insurance Plans be the Real Reformers?

When members of Congress who led the effort to overhaul the U.S. health care system saw the public option slipping away, some of them suggested that a viable alternative would be the fostering of nonprofit health insurance CO-OPs (Consumer Oriented and Operated Plans) throughout the country.

I was among the many who belittled the idea. Having spent two decades in the health insurance industry, I knew how difficult it is for even the biggest insurers to establish a presence in markets where one or two other insurance firms dominate. And there are hardly any markets left where that is not the case.

The barriers to entry in any given market are so high that the only way insurers have been able to establish much of a foothold where the don?t already have a presence is to acquire one or more existing companies. Aetna became a big player in Philadelphia, for example, only after it bought U.S. Healthcare several years ago.

If you don?t have a sizable membership base, it is difficult to negotiate rates with doctors and hospitals that are as favorable as those that bigger insurers can get. If you have to pay providers more than your competitors, you will have to charge your customers higher premiums. It is almost impossible to grow your membership if you have to price your premiums higher than your competitors. It?s a chicken-and-egg thing and why we have seen such rapid consolidation in the insurance industry. And it?s why I was skeptical that start-up non-profit CO-OPs would have a snowball?s chance.

I?m happy to report that I might have been wrong. In fact, CO-OPs could be one of the sleepers in the health care reform law that truly transforms how care is financed and delivered in this country. And they could even hasten the day when the big investor-owned corporations cede the marketplace to nonprofits and move on to other ways of earning a profit.

That?s because of the financial assistance that eligible nonprofit groups are getting from the federal government ? thanks to the Affordable Care Act ? and also because of the approaches the groups being selected for solvency and start-up loans are taking to get their operations up and running.

To date, the Department of Health and Human Services has awarded more than $982 million in low-interest loans to 12-nonprofit groups from California to Maine to help them overcome those barriers to entry. The reform law provides a total of $3.4 billion in loans for local groups that meet high eligibility criteria, so several more prospective CO-OPs will be selected in the months ahead. We?re not talking about grants here. The start-up money must be repaid to the government ? with interest. All of the CO-OPs will have to offer coverage through the Internet-based marketplaces (exchanges) the reform law requires states to establish by January 1, 2014.

If all goes as planned, every state will have at least one CO-OP. And there are reports that at least one plan already has negotiated a good rate with local hospitals by explaining how CO-OPs can help them reduce the amount of uncompensated care they incur every year by treating uninsured patients.

One of the health policy experts who is optimistic about the transformative potential of CO-OPs is Mila Kofman, former insurance commissioner in Maine who is now a research professor and project director at Georgetown University?s Health Policy Institute.

?With seed money from the federal government, along with the subsidies moderate-income and middle class individuals and families will receive if they buy coverage through the exchanges, the CO-OPs could be significant game-changers, especially in states where the whole market is dominated by a single company.?

Kofman speaks from experience. The individual and small group marketplace in Maine was dominated by for-profit Anthem Blue Cross (a subsidiary of WellPoint) until the state selected nonprofit Harvard Pilgrim Health Care to provide coverage options for small businesses, individuals and self-employed residents through a public-private partnership called DirigoChoice ? a precursor to the state exchanges ? a few years ago. In 2004, Anthem had a 91 percent share of the individual market and a 68 percent share of the small business market. Five years later, Anthem?s share had dropped to 49 percent in both the individual and small business markets because of competition from Harvard Pilgrim.

?Nothing else changed,? said Kofman. ?It was this private-public partnership that enabled Harvard Pilgrim to come in and open the market to more competition. And when you open the market up to competition, other companies can grow, too, which is what happened in Maine.?

Kofman said she believes there is great potential depending on how the CO-OPs are organized. She likes what she has seen so far. At least three of the 12 organizations receiving grants so far will grow out of community health centers that have a focus on providing primary care. Some others are affiliated with Medicaid managed care organizations that also have an emphasis on prevention and primary care.

?Their philosophy is very different from what most of us are used to,? she said.

It is this different philosophy that could transform the U.S. health care system, especially if the nonprofit CO-OPs ? which, blessedly, will not have to devote a lot of premium revenue to satisfy Wall Street investors ? live up to their potential.

Democrat Tom Barrett aggressively countered the reign of Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker during their debate in a bit to unseat him.

?This is all part of this ideological civil war. He wants this state to be the prototype for the tea party nationally ? I have no desire to be the rock star of the far right of this nation and I have no desire to be the rock star of the far left of this nation. I was photographing at Fort De Soto's north beach on May 30th, 2008 when I
had a very cooperative Snowy Egret (Egretta thula) start fishing in the
warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico right in front of me. People have
nicknamed Snowy Egrets "Golden Slippers" because of their yellow feet, this

Ash-throated Flycatchers (Myiarchus cinerascens) migrate to Northern
California from Mexico and Central America every Spring to nest. They are
cavity nesting birds and I one of the species that nest in my birdhouses
every year. Every May I look forward to waking up in the morning hearing
that sweet gurgling call. The gathering of nest [...]

When you suffer from back pain, each moment can feel like your longest; there are no activities during which your back pain is not considered; no comfortable night?s rest during which the healing process begins and energy is restored. Subsequently, back pain relief becomes first and foremost on the minds of sufferers. Luckily, there are many options from which to choose.

For many, the first thought when it comes to back pain relief is medication. And while there are a host of prescription medications that will alleviate back pain, they are doing nothing more than masking the symptoms instead of tackling the underlying cause of pain. Medication should be used sparingly and under the strict supervision of a medical professional. But it should also be your last resort for back pain relief. Use over-the-counter pain medication for back pain relief to help you combat discomfort while you work to rectify the underlying causes of your back pain.

While it may seem as though exercise of any kind would be the worst thing for back pain relief, it may often be the very best thing you can do to help alleviate your discomfort and put you on the road to healing. Any exercise program must be strictly supervised by your doctor; not every exercise is appropriate for everyone and it?s crucial that you follow instructions so as not to further injure your back and increase your pain. However, when done responsibly and with guidance, exercise can do much in the way of back pain relief.

There are a number of different exercises that may be appropriate for back pain relief. Your doctor may recommend a walking program, or one of light aerobic exercise. As your strength increases, you may begin a program that incorporates light weights to help build muscle strength. Ultimately, strong, healthy muscles and overall physical fitness will work to deter injury and back pain.

Further exercise for back pain relief includes stretching exercises, yoga, and Pilates. Stretching works to improve flexibility and keep muscles limber. Pilates and yoga both work to strengthen the body?s core muscles thus lending essential support to the back.

Some who suffer from back pain find that work with acupuncturists, chiropractors, and physical therapists offers back pain relief through the use of holistic treatments, body alignment, massage, and therapeutic exercise.

Finding back pain relief that works for you ? without the use of medication ? will help to improve and strengthen your back so that you may never have to experience back pain again.

Forecasters: 9 to 15 storms this hurricane season

MIAMI (AP) ? U.S. forecasters predicted Thursday that this year's Atlantic hurricane season would produce a normal number of about nine to 15 tropical storms.

As many as four to eight of those storms could strengthen into hurricanes, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's initial outlook for the six-month storm season that officially begins June 1. One to three of those could become major hurricanes with top winds of 111 mph or higher.

The weather phenomenon known as El Nino, which warms Pacific waters near the equator and increases wind shear over the Atlantic, may develop by the late summer or early fall and help suppress storm development, forecasters said.

This season got an early start when Tropical Storm Alberto formed Saturday off the coast of South Carolina. Alberto dissipated Tuesday over the Atlantic.

Forecasters name tropical storms when their top winds reach 39 mph; hurricanes have maximum winds of at least 74 mph. The next named storm will be named Beryl.

No major hurricane has made a U.S. landfall in the last six years, since Hurricane Wilma cut across South Florida in 2005. Federal officials used Thursday's prediction to remind coastal areas about the importance of emergency preparedness.

August will mark the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Andrew's catastrophic landfall in South Florida as a Category 5 storm. The season that spawned Andrew started late and produced a total of just six named storms.

"Although this outlook suggests a less active season compared to recent years, the bottom line here is to prepare," said Robert Detrick, NOAA assistant administrator in the agency's Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research. "It takes just one major landfalling hurricane to make for a bad season."

The seasonal average is 11 named storms, six hurricanes and two major hurricanes.

The 2011 hurricane season, one of the busiest on record with 19 named storms, produced Irene, one of the costliest storms in U.S. history.

Hurricane season ends Nov. 30, and the peak period for hurricane activity runs from August through October.

Assisting Cognitive Impaired Senior Citizens: Las Vegas Senior Care

Living assistance services for senior citizens requires patience, compassion, dedication as well as the ability to help with everyday tasks. For senior citizens suffering from cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer?s, they often need caregivers to help with hygienic tasks such as getting out of bed, brushing their teeth and dressing. A leading non-medical senior home care center of Las Vegas provides specialized care for the cognitive impaired. Although this network has the capability to serve all senior citizens, this Senior Home Care provider of Las Vegas realizes that these illnesses have their own individual set of issues and concerns.

Caregiver Tips: Caring for Loved Ones with Cognitive Impairments

At a general presentation for the Cleveland Clinic, a Senior Home Care Las Vegas expert presented movement demonstrations and language on helping cognitive impaired senior citizens.

Hygienic assistance is crucial and caregivers should exercise patience whether they have to simply remind a senior citizen to brush their teeth, provide a demonstration or assist them with this on a daily basis.

When a senior citizen is suffering from a cognitive impairment, caregivers need to do their best in ensuring that he or she remains calm.

A proactive approach that is often helpful is to make the environment a familiar setting for the senior citizen. The Senior Home Care Las Vegas provides daily routines for its cognitive impaired patients beginning when they wake up in the morning. These Las Vegas Senior Care experts aim to minimize the amount of agitation, especially in the morning so that the rest of the day can go well.

Another daily task that needs to be monitored carefully is getting dressed and is equally important to daily hygienic tasks. Getting dressed can be a time consuming task but the family and friends of the senior citizen should be consulted about what he or she feels most comfortable wearing during the day. Furthermore developing a succinct routine for dressing everyday should make the task easier. While demonstrating and instructing may take more time, senior citizens with cognitive impairment should be encouraged pick out clothes and get dressed on their own. The Senior Home Care of Las Vegas aims to form trusting and lasting relationships so that senior citizens can feel confident and secure.

?

Las Vegas Senior Care specialists realize that no two people with cognitive impairment are the same. Each individual resident has her or his own unique set of needs and preferences. Certain residents have more trouble with hygienic tasks such as showering or going to the bathroom. Other people requiring Senior Home Care in Las Vegas struggle more with getting in and out of bed. Whatever the needs of the senior citizen, a daily routine is important to maintain an ideal and healthy environment. Alzheimer?s and other related illnesses can be difficult to cope with but with the right caregivers, senior citizens can receive the assistance and companionship they deserve and need.
