Nissan not saying if Mercedes deal will add jobs

(AP)? CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ? A Nissan spokesman in Tennessee said the Japanese automaker is not ready to say if an agreement to build Mercedes-Benz gasoline engines at Nissan's plant at Decherd will create new jobs.

Daimler and Renault-Nissan said Sunday that production of the four-cylinder engines at Nissan's Decherd plant is set to begin in 2014. Engines from the factory will be used in Mercedes-Benz and Nissan Infiniti cars.

The two companies in April 2010 launched a part-sharing and small car alliance.

Nissan spokesman Steve Parrett said Monday that "staffing levels will be adjusted as ramp up and demand warrant" and there are no specific job numbers at this time.

The plan is for engines from Decherd to be used in Mercedes C-Class sedans that will be built at Daimler's Tuscaloosa, Ala., plant.
